Abstract The activities of lysozyme ,superoxide dismutase (SOD) ,catalase (CAT ) ,and glutathione peroxidase (GSH‐Px) ,and contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) were studied in gill ,hepatopancreas and muscle of Chinese mitten‐handed carb (Eriocheir sinensis) with body weight of 165-175 g farmed under organic and traditional farming patterns . The results showed that the activities of SOD and CAT in hepatopancreas and muscle were significantly higher in the crab farmed in organic pattern than in traditional pattern (P <0.05) ,without significant difference in the activity of SOD and CAT in gills (P>0 .05) .The activity of GSH‐Px was found to be much higher in gill ,hepatopancreas and muscle of Chinese mitten‐handed crab cultured in organic pattern than in traditional pattern (P <0 .05) .There was significantly lower content of MDA in gill , hepatopancreas and muscle of Chinese mitten‐handed crab cultured in organic pattern than in traditional pattern (P <0 .05) .Lysozyme activitiy was much higher in hepatopancreas of Chinese mitten‐handed crab cultured in organic pattern than in traditional pattern (P <0 .05) .The findings indicate that Chinese mitten‐handed crab cultured in the organic pattern show stronger ability of antioxidant defenses and resistance to diseases than the crab farmed in the traditional pattern .
