Abstract The correlation of morphological characteristics of the 4‐month‐old stone bream (Oplegnathus f asciatus)was studied ,and the body weight ,path coefficient and determination coefficient were calculated via path analysis .The results showed that the Pearson correlations between every two metric traits were ranged from 0 .065 to 0 .949 ,with significance (P<0 .01);the data showed that the effect of morphomet‐ric traits on body weight was different ,the trait with the strongest direct effect on body weight showed effect on body depth ,with path coefficient of 0 .596 ,and determination coefficient of 0 .3552 .The total de‐cision coefficient of various characters to body weight was 0 .8808 .The findings showed that the selected character was the main body quality properties ;during the selection breeding of this phase , the body depth ,total length should be considered for the indirect selective breeding of the body quality ,to ensure the effect of selective breeding .
