Abstract The habit and adaptability of common octopus Octopus variabilis to water temperature, salinity and pH were studied in a tank with a shelter of tiles, bricks, rocks and plastic tubes. During the experiment, the water temperature was regulated by an electric heater and ice packs, the pH values were controlled by addition of NaOH and HCl and the salinity was maintained by various proportions of fresh water and NaCl. The results showed that the common octopus tended to inhabit under the shelters of tiles, bricks and rocks and rested in the mud seafloor at a water temperature of 10~31 ℃,optimally ranging from 12 to 27 ℃,a salinity of 16.3~27.3,alternatively from 18.3 to 24.3,and the pH from 6.2 to 9.7 with the optimal range of 6.7~9.2.
