Abstract The effects of arachidonic acid(AA)on the cell growth and astaxanthin content in alge Haematococcus pluvialis were studied in this paper. The results showed that an appropriate concentration of AA(62.5 mg/L)promoted the cell growth of the alga while low concentrations(0.1~12.5 mg/L)and the high concentrations of AA(312.5~1562.5 mg/L)treatments both restrained the cell growth of the alge. AA treatments promoted astaxanthin accumulation, with the increased AA concentrations, the astaxanthin content increased gradually, either. At the rate of 312.5 mg/L AA,the astaxanthin content reached its maximum(3.67 mg/L). There was 48.8% higher in astaxanthin accumulation at 312.5 mg/L treatment compared with the control groups.
