Cultivation of “Penglaihong 3”, a New Variety of Zhikong Scallop Chlamys farreri in Fujian Province of China

Abstract:To promote the efficient cultivation of high-quality Zhikong scallop Chlamys farreri, the growth and developmental process of the improved variety “Penglaihong 3”, characterized by a large adductor muscle, rapid growth, and high survival, was investigated in Rongcheng, Shandong Province (N 37°9′13.0″, E 122°27′19.8″). In November 2023, five-month-old individuals were transferred to Lianjiang (N 26°19′2.7″, E 119°32′18.5″), Fujian Province, where C. farreri farming has not yet been established, for cultivation trial. The fertilization and hatching rates both exceeded 90%. D-shaped larvae [shell length: (109.67±2.69) μm] developed within 42 h after fertilization, larvae reached the settlement/metamorphosis stage [(185.80±5.87) μm] by 17 days, and juveniles [(208.50±9.10) μm] were obtained by 21 days at a water temperature of 18 ℃. During the seven-month field trial in Lianjiang, the mean shell height increased significantly from (23.21±3.21) mm at five months of age to a marketable size of (67.48±5.31) mm at 12 months. The survival rate reached 99.5%, and shell height was 20.73% greater than that of the same population cultured in Rongcheng. This study establishes a novel one-year cultivation model for C. farreri that traditionally required nearly two years to reach marketable size in northern China, and provides essential data to guide the large-scale breeding and cultivation of “Penglaihong 3” variety in southern China.
