Abstract Recently, two-stage generalized additive models (GAMs) have been considered as most accurate and effective model to investigate fishery resources habitat. In this study, we used this model to analyze the influence of environment factors on resources abundance and predicted distribution of feeding habitat of jumbo flying squid Dosidicus gigas off Peru, based on squid jigging production and environmental data. The results of two-stage GAMs showed that catch per unit of effort (CPUE) was only significantly influenced by latitude in spring, by latitude and sea surface temperature in summer, by sea surface temperature and sea surface height in autumn and by latitude and sea surface height in winter, while slightly influenced by chlorophyll a in the four seasons. Hypothesized feeding grounds were S 15°, W 77° in spring, S 24°—26°, W 75°—78° in summer, S 12°—16° off Peru and S 28° off the central Chile in autumn, and S 13°—18° in winter off Peru. The finding will provide basic information for the jigging fishery in the study area.
