Abstract A previously unreported Sargassum species was identified in Tanmen ,Qionghai city of Hainan province .Morphological identification revealed that most features of the unreported Sargassum species were very similar to S . pseudolanceolatum ,except for the structures of vesicles ,thus ,it was named S . pseudolanceolatum var . tanmen .Further analysis of the sequence characteristics of internal transcribed space ,and the genetic relationship between S .pseudolanceolatum var .tanmen and other Sargassum spe‐cies showed that S .pseudolanceolatum var .tanmen belonged to S .subgen .Sargassum ,and was closely related to S .v achellianum and S .henslow ianum .
