Abstract:L‐dopamine and serotonin (5‐HT ) are routine monoamine neurotransmitters that may have dual effects on the larval growth of the bay scallop A rgopecten irradians irradians .They may accelerate larval growth by stimulating cilia beating and thus feeding while inhibition of larval growth may occur as a result of extra energy cost caused by accelerated ciliary movements .This study aimed to determine the ultimate outcome of the dual effects of L‐dopamine and 5‐HT on larval growth and also explore the underlying mechanism by examining the actions of 5‐HT and its antagonists ,trazodone and cyproheptadine .The re‐sults showed that larval growth was most accelerated by 0 .1 ng/L L‐dopamine and 1 .0 ng/L 5‐HT .The blockade of the 5‐HT actions by its antagonists suggests that 5‐HT may exert its effects via its binding to 5‐HT2 A receptor .These monoamines may be potentially used to accelerate larval growth in scallop cul‐ture .
