Abstract:Microorganisms capable of producing 2-haloacid dehalogenase have been frequently isolated from the soil, but rarely from the sea. A total of 139 bacterial strains producing the 2-haloacid dehalogenase were enriched and isolated on agar with 2-chloropropionic acid as sole carbon source. Most of the strains showed high salinity tolerance, and were identified as moderately halophilic bacteria. Some of the strains showed the highest salinity tolerance up to 14.6% NaCl. Results of substrate specificity showed that most of the strains degraded a range of organohalogen compounds. These strains, as the first isolation of dehalogenating bacteria from marine sponge, showed good prospects for the further use in biotechnology and environmental field.
