Effects of Unilateral Eyestalk Ablation on Growth and Ovarian Development inMalaysian Prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii

Abstract:To investigate the role of eyestalks in the reproductive regulation of Malaysian prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii, unilateral eyestalk ablation (test group) was performed in healthy 4-month-old female prawn with initial body weight of 22.08 g using forceps and then reared in a 2.0 m×2.0 m×0.6 m cement pond for 60 days to examine its effects on growth, ovarian development, and serum biochemical indicators compared to the control group (no treatment) at water temperature of (28±1) ℃. The results showed that there was significantly lower feed conversion ratio in the treatment group (P<0.05), without significant difference in body weight and survival rate between the treatment and control groups (P>0.05). The significantly higher ovigerous ratio and gonadosomatic index were observed in the treatment group compared to the control group (P<0.05). Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) revealed that the expression levels of vitellogenin and vitellogenin receptor in the ovaries were significantly up-regulated in the treatment group (P<0.05). Serum biochemical analysis indicated that the Malaysian prawn in treatment group had significantly elevated levels of glycated serum protein, low-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, cholesterol, calcium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, and zinc (P<0.05). It was found that unilateral eyestalk ablation promoted ovarian development, increased ovigerous ratio, and influenced serum metabolite levels in female M. rosenbergii under the experimental conditions. These findings provide basis for understanding of the role of the eyestalk in reproductive regulation in crustaceans.
